Georgians flee their homes. The bottom photo reminds me eerily of a nightmare I had as a small child in which the exact same thing happened to me, including the same type of vehicle. I'll never forget that nightmare, nor will I ever stop trying to figure out how the hell it got into my head as a three-year-old who probably never saw anything like this in the media!

Russia advances to border of South Ossetia/Georgia

Russian strike craft bombed our air bases: Georgia

" They have been calling it training exercises, but they have not been concealing the fact that they are training these troops for use inside Georgia," he said.

"The way the escalation went was we came first under extensive artillery barrage from the separatists ... but in the end I was told that Russian armored vehicles started to cross the Georgian border. And that was exactly the moment when I had to take this decision to fire back."

The head of Georgia's Security Council, Kakha Lomaia, said on Friday Georgia would withdraw 1,000 soldiers from Iraq to help fight off Russian forces in South Ossetia.

(...)the United States supports Georgia's territorial integrity and we call for an immediate ceasefire," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said in a statement.

I'd accuse Russia of wanting to annex South Ossetia. I'd advise against it, and also against becoming militarily involved in the war in any way whatsoever, as the war is none of Russia's business (go to the United Nations first, use diplomacy first, you bloody hypocrites!). Interfering would only help me make the case that Russia has reverted to its Soviet-style imperialist agenda and has once again become a military aggressor hellbent on invasion and annexation, just like the old Evil Empire.

Was this planned for today, the first day of the Bloody Beijing Olympics? What's Russia's agenda here?

Russia targeting, bombing civilians: Georgian President

TBLISI, Georgia (CNN) -- Russian and Georgian troops fought Friday over the disputed Caucasus region of South Ossetia as world powers implored the two nations to end the violence.

News reports documented fierce clashes between Georgian and Russian forces -- engagements that caused deaths, property damage, and population displacement in South Ossetia, a pro-Russian autonomous region of Georgia.

Georgia's president said: "All day today, they've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting (the) civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead among (the) civilian population all around the country," President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN in an exclusive interview.
