Why is he getting away with it?
Lorrie Goldstein scratches his head about it.
After all, rich Canadians (Williams is a multi-millionaire) who head south for treatment have always been convenient bogeymen for defenders of the status quo in medicare, which, sadly, includes most Canadian politicians.
They use them as whipping boys to fear-monger against any reform of medicare involving a greater role for the private sector, as is common in Europe, often with better medical services and outcomes for patients. (Anybody remember them?)
And yet all we hear from our political class is perpetual hysteria about how any reform of medicare will lead to “two-tier, American-style health care” of the type preferred by, you guessed it, rich Canadians, who would selfishly “jump the queue” here, as they now do by heading south.
And yet Williams was even praised by pro-medicare types for not taking up a space in line in our system by going to the U.S. Huh?
Goldstein suggests that Williams is getting off easy because he's a... "Progressive" and because he hypocritically sings the dubious praises of socialist-only medicine. Yep. Do as he says, not as he does... a typical Prog. Yep. That's Danny Williams.
Besides, Williams is also a Harper-and-Tory basher, despite being a (provincial) "Tory" himself (a RED "Tory", actually). The Hard Left Progs love anyone who bashes Conservatives and Conservative leaders.
It's a lot like how the Democrats in the US get away with being racists and tyrants. As long as they're onside with "Progressivism", they can get away with anything. Hell, they'll even get away with with negligent homicide (remember Chappaquiddick, Teddy K. and Mary Jo?).

That is pretty much the long and the short of it. The lame stream media will let anyone get away with anything, providing they also bash 'Stevie and the Neocons'.
