The independent daily Al-Masry Al-Youm said in a report Monday that Sheik Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi would soon order the ban implemented in all of al-Azhar’s institutions.
A security official also said they had verbal orders to prevent students wearing the face-covering veil, known as the niqab, from entering al-Azhar schools, and dormitories of three Cairo universities for security reasons.

Tantawi said the face veil is only a custom and not an Islamic precept.
Hear that, Big Left? It's not required by Islam; it's just a custom. We can therefore ban it without violating Muslim womens' Charter rights!
So let's ban the veil! Ban the burka! Nobody shall be permitted to hide their faces!
Equality for all, special "rights" for none! After all, what if it was Osama bin Laden? What if he used the veil or a burka to hide his face? How could we catch the bugger, then? What if it was Adnan el Shukrijumah, bin Laden's "Nuclear Lieutenant" in charge of the "American Hiroshima" plot, another of the FBI's most wanted terrorists? All they need is to dress in Islamic drag!
