Lately I've watched in consternation as the Opposition in Ottawa and the MSM have been obsessing over the government's decision to not lower the flag for each and every combat casualty. The Conservatives decided to return to an eighty-year old protocol in which the flag would fly high during wartime, including during WWII. The flag will, however, be lowered every Remembrance Day to honor all fallen soldiers equally, as has long been the case.
The government has also been criticized for banning the media from covering the arrival of the fallen heroes in Trenton, where they're met by their families. The warriors currently in Afghanistan, however, support the government's decision.
The Opposition and the MSM are merely playing cynical politics. It's shameful. Dishonorable. I'm disgusted with their behavior.
The Liberals, when in power, only decided to lower the flag for the four warriors who fell due to friendly fire... in order to play politics, as they didn't do it for the other fallen warriors during their reign. So today thier demand to lower the flag for every casualty of war is nothing if not hypocritical and disappointing to the max.
We honor the fallen warriors by understanding why they fought, why they died, and for what: freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Those who take these great gifts for granted, yet would dare play politics at a time like this are not honoring the heroes.
We honor their selfless sacrifices by supporting current warriors in their mission and not doing anything to make them feel alone. We honor them by ensuring the government provides them with all the best tools and equipment with which to do their job.
To the Opposition and the MSM: stop it. You're wrong; history and tradition say so, as do the brave warriors currently fighting for freedom in Afghanistan.
The Canadian warriors are standing on guard for thee!
