Not only that; they're engaged in de-facto ethnic cleansing of Georgians as well in those areas.
TBILISI, Georgia (AP) - Russian troops remaining in Georgian territory are effectively preventing Georgians from returning to their homes, a U.N. representative said Saturday.Melita Sunjic, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner of Refugees in Georgia, said that although it was not clear if Russian soldiers were actually preventing refugees from returning, the warnings by the troops effectively block them.
"If they say 'we can't guarantee your safety,' you don't go," she told The Associated Press.
Some 2,000 refugees are at UNHCR camps in Gori, and possibly thousands of others are in the region, hoping to return to villages that are in the so-called "security zones" that Russia has claimed for itself on Georgian territory.
Hmm... you know, why is it that the international community won't let Israel have her own, legally-won-in-a-war-of-self-defence-in-1967 territory known as "Gaza" and the "West Bank"? Even though Israel didn't try to ethnically cleanse the area of non-Israeli "refugees"?
The implication of allowing Russia to occupy and ethnically cleanse the areas it's annexed by force, offensively and without provocation, will entail that the international community will have to, from now on, shut the hell up about Israel keeping the territory that is legally, rightly, morally, ethically hers, and even if Israel were to one day require all non-Israeli "refugees" in the area to either completely, unconditionally assimilate as Israelis and follow all laws without exception or leave the areas. If the Muslim nations in the Middle East continue to refuse, even after all this time, to accept their Muslim brothers and sisters as required of them by Islam, well, that's not Israel's problem, and we have no right to blame Israel. That is the problem of the Islamic World and the international community who claims to play some kind of god or something but who is clearly not.
Israel has patiently taken enough unfair, hateful crap already. Israel doesn't have to do anything the international community demands- Israel has earned the right to do whatsoever it wishes with its own territory, as it has demonstrated more than reasonable restraint and respect for human rights and everything already. Leave Israel alone, if you're going to leave the offensively, illegally imperialist, evil, Nazi-like, hateful, murderous, civilian-targeting, ethnic cleansing Russia alone.
And also shut up about the Coalition of the Willing in Iraq and Afghanistan, too, and about Guantanamo Bay. Shut up, international (especially the socialist part thereof!) community, or go and push Russia out of Georgia by force, damn the consequences. Your choice.
