The Arctic Belongs To Canada: PM Harper

One could also consider it as a declaration to imperialist, territory-stealing Russia: Don't even think about it!

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made it clear Wednesday he considers the Arctic to be Canadian territory -- and he has no plans to loosen his grip on the disputed North.

"Harper began the tour in Tuktoyaktuk with an announcement on Arctic sovereignty, essentially arguing Canada should extend its jurisdictional reach into the Arctic Ocean, doubling it from 100 nautical miles to 200 nautical miles," said CTV parliamentary correspondent Graham Richardson, who is travelling with the prime minister.

In addition, Harper announced plans to make changes to the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act, allowing Canada to regulate all ships within 200 nautical miles of Canadian land in order to guard against pollution. The legislation currently covers all waters within 100 nautical miles of Canadian shore.

"We will be sending a clear message to the world that our environmental standards and sovereignty are not up for debate -- if you are in Canada's Arctic you will be playing by Canada's rules."


...That's what I call standing up for Canada. That's what Stephen Harper promised to do.
